What’s the function?
Chirag Patel is a behaviour consultant, educator and keynote speaker. He works with people and animals across species, from dogs and cats to wolves and belugas, helping people understand behaviour and create the conditions for meaningful change.
Compassion. Clarity. Contingencies.
Looking beyond labels
The work rests on radical behaviourism, the philosophy behind behaviour analysis. Radical here means going to the roots: understanding behaviour in context, through an individual’s learning history and what happens around them.
Labels can describe behaviour, but they don’t explain it. Thoughts and feelings are part of behaviour too, and they’re taken seriously. Change comes from examining and arranging conditions, not from simply expecting someone to behave differently.
In practice, that means listening before advising, building in choice, and looking at the effects of our own behaviour as trainers and educators, not only the behaviour of those we teach. Every claim stays open to examination, including ours.
How the work runs
Observe
What is actually happening, described as a camera would see it.
Understand
History, current context, what comes before and after, and what the behaviour achieves.
Arrange
Environments and learning opportunities that make new behaviour possible.
Teach
Useful skills, built in steps the learner can succeed at.
Evaluate
Outcomes measured, not assumed.
Adapt
Change the plan when the evidence says so.
The same sequence applies to animals, people, professionals, teams and organisations.
